Incorporating elements of yoga, Tai Chi, dance, gymnastics and swimming, the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®  is an extraordinary form of exercise developed by Juliu Horvath, a Romanian ballet dancer. Formerly known as ‘Yoga for Dancers’, the system was originally developed for the exacting bodies of ballet dancers and in response to his own injuries having ended his dance career. The GYROTONIC® exercise method is now being used world wide by physiotherapists, artists, athletes and the general public for rehabilitation, improved performance, general fitness and well being.

The exercises are performed on beautifully hand-crafted equipment sculpted from wood designed to allow the body to move through its full range of movement. Integrating breath with movement, while the body moves through its full three-dimensional range of motion, simultaneously builds strength and flexibility and enables the whole body to work inter-dependently and in harmony with its structural design.

A GYROTONIC® session is more a form of moving meditation than a traditional workout. The exercises encourage you to be present  and the movements stimulate the body’s musculature  and nervous systems – the result is a more fully functional body and a feeling of total well-being, rejuvenation and balance.

The Exercise

Developed by Juliu Horvath, a former ballet dancer, the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®  has similarities to the practice of tai chi, yoga, dance or swimming. The unique design of the equipment allows the body to move through its full range of motion while eliminating  the stresses often experienced with traditional exercise equipment.  This differs from most other exercise methods that perhaps develop strength but at the expense of flexibility or functionality.  GYROKINESIS® (more here) is the equivalent form of exercise performed utilizing a stool and mat.

The characteristic circular and spiral movements of GYROTONIC® incorporate a coordinated breathing pattern that stimulates the various organs and systems throughout the body. While simultaneously stretching and strengthening muscles and the supporting tissues surrounding the joints, the increased functionality results in an integrated whole that is stronger, more flexible and balanced. The benefit of whole body functional integration.
